Lean Green Laboratory Machine (199-007-10)
| Date: |
Thursday, August 26, 2010 @ 12:00pm CST |
| Abstract: |
New technology is often considered taboo in the laboratory. How often have you heard, “If it isn’t broken then why try to fix it?” This workshop will explain the need for new technology in the laboratory. Workflow optimization will be discussed along with cost reduction, turnaround time, standardization of procedures, improve performance and green technology. Learn how to get everyone in the lab eager to embrace new technology. |
| Objectives: |
- Review a written justification for new equipment
- Review how to obtain department approval for new technology
- Review how to get a skeptical employee eager for change
- Review Standard Laboratory Procedures
- Review how improving workflow can decrease operational cost and turnaround time

Microwave Special Staining: Basic (199-008-10)
| Date: |
Thursday, October 28, 2010 @ 12:00pm CST |
| Abstract: |
Microwave technology can save time and enhance results when performing many special stains but how do you determine which stains to convert to microwave? When is time savings not cost effective? This workshop will address successfully adapting special stain protocols to a laboratory microwave. Part one of a two part series this program will address the basic or routine stains commonly used in Histology. A discussion of protocols, mode of action and troubleshooting tips will help identify the best techniques for microwave application. |
| Objectives: |
- Identify protocols that are time and cost effective for microwave applications
- Adapt standard protocols to laboratory microwave application
- Troubleshoot common artifacts

Microwave Special Staining: Advanced (199-009-10)
| Date: |
Thursday, November 18, 2010 @ 12:00pm CST |
| Abstract: |
Silver stains tend to be complex and time consuming, use of microwave technology can reduce the time to as little as twenty minutes. Utilizing a laboratory microwave with standardization of time and temperature parameters can simplify even complex silver stains. This workshop will address selecting the best protocol for consistent results, adapting existing protocols for use with a laboratory microwave, and avoiding troublesome artifacts. |
| Objectives: |
- Discuss performing and troubleshooting methenamine silver stains
- Describe special considerations for successful staining of Pneumocystis jiroveci (PcP)
- Review the use of silver stains for demonstration of Helicobacter pylori
- Discuss adapting protocols for use with a laboratory microwave
